Jane Kirkpatrick
A Clearing in the Wild is part of a trilogy – I will not be reading the subsequent books. The novel was okay, slightly entertaining, but overall dry and pretty predictable. My attention was not grabbed but I kept turning the pages for this review.
Emma is brave, courageous, and stubborn, which is how she ends up travelling pregnant cross country with a small group of men to start a new community. Equally stubborn is her husband and the town leader, who both initially try to keep Emma in her societal place as a submissive, quiet wife. Emma and Christian end up on an adventure to start a new colony in a setting that is foreign and exciting to them.
